Volume 3 – February 29, 2020

Book Talk:

Book I just finished & one from earlier this year:

  • From the Depths of our Hearts by Benedict XVI & Robert Cardinal Sarah – this book caused a little controversy even before it came out because of its subject matter.  It is about the priesthood and celibacy in the church, and y’all, it is beautiful.  If you’ve ever wondered about the celibacy in the priesthood, then this book is for you.
  • The Bible is a Catholic Book by Jimmy Akin – this is a Catholic Answers book that details the origins of the Bible.  It’s very interesting to read about how our Bible came about, and it includes a lot of background and details that I never knew.  It’s written for anyone, really, Catholic or not.

Blogger Review:

Y’all, one of my favorite bloggers is Kathryn Whitaker who blogs at teamwhitaker.org.  She lives in Austin with her husband, who works for the Diocese of Austin, and six kids.  She’s an Aggie through and through, and she tells it like it is!  We’re planning on reading her book Live Big, Love Bigger for our next brunch book after Lent.  She even came to West for a book signing!

For a sample of her wit and wisdom, here’s her post on Lent:

Here is a great new way to look at the Stations of the Cross by praying with the Psalms – of you scroll down there is a link to get a free audio!

Here’s a little something I found highly entertaining:

Keeping it Real:

Spaghetti & Waffles

At our last get-together, we talked about how men and women think and process differently – we likened our (female) brains to squirrels, acknowledging that men think in a more linear fashion.  I just got a (ok, another) book by Danielle Bean (one of her earlier ones), and I was just flipping through it and came upon her version of this difference in thought process.  She quoted someone (I can’t remember who), saying that men’s brains are like a waffle, with all the little squares compartmentalizing everything, and keeping everything separate.  With women, our brains are like spaghetti, weaving in and out, each thought touching on multiple other thoughts, with one thought (or area or our life) affecting many other areas.

Reminds me of a meme I once saw that said: I don’t have ducks, and they aren’t in a row.  I have squirrels and they are at a rave!!  So that’s it, ladies, squirrels and spaghetti – no wonder we are so tired at the end of the day!
